About Us
We are the department of the European Commission, dedicated to managing Migration and Home Affairs in Europe.
Our key focus areas include:
-
Migration and Asylum
In September 2020, the New Pact on Migration and Asylum was proposed, and it received final approval in December 2023. This pact seeks to ensure a fair, efficient, and well-managed system for migration and asylum in the European Union, balancing responsibility and solidarity among member states.
-
Internal Security
Our department plays a crucial role in ensuring Europe's internal security through the Security Union Strategy (2020-2025). Our initiatives focus on combating terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking, while promoting cross-border collaboration between law enforcement agencies. We are working toward new legislation to address illicit trafficking of firearms and crimes like child exploitation and abuse.
-
Border Management and Schengen Area
Our team ensures the protection of the European Union's external borders while safeguarding the integrity of the Schengen Area. This allows EU citizens and legally residing non-EU nationals to travel freely within the Schengen zone without being subjected to border checks between participating states.
-
Global Relations
We work with international partners to promote collaboration on security, migration, and other pressing global issues. Our external actions enhance the EU's standing as a responsible and pragmatic global actor. We also manage funding instruments to support activities within the scope of home affairs and international cooperation.
