What is a Schengen Visa?
A Schengen visa allows non-EU citizens to enter the Schengen region for short-term visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Schengen visas are available in the following types:
- Single-entry visa – This permits entry to the Schengen zone one time only.
- Multiple-entry visa – This allows multiple visits to Schengen countries for the duration of the visa’s validity.
- Airport transit visa – Required for connecting flights in the international transit zone of a Schengen airport without entering the country.

Who Needs a Schengen Visa?
Citizens from certain non-EU countries are required to hold a short-stay visa when traveling to the Schengen area.
Check the EU visa requirements list to see if your country is included. Exceptions may apply to specific groups like diplomats, military personnel, or students on school trips.
Airport Transit Visas
- Citizens from certain non-EU nations must obtain an airport transit visa to change flights in the Schengen area.
- Additional airport transit visa requirements may apply to citizens of certain countries, as outlined in Article 3(5) of the Visa Code.
Where to Apply
You should apply for your Schengen visa at the consulate of the country where you plan to visit:
- If visiting more than one country, apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the most time.
- If your stay is equal in multiple countries, apply at the consulate of the first country you will enter.
Generally, you should apply at the consulate that has jurisdiction over your place of residence.
When to Apply
Submit your visa application at least 15 days before your trip and no earlier than 6 months before your departure.
Some consulates require you to schedule an appointment prior to submitting your application.
Documents Required for a Schengen Visa
- A valid passport with an expiry date at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area.
- A completed visa application form.
- A passport photo that meets ICAO standards.
- Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, hospitalization, and repatriation.
- Supporting documents proving the purpose of your trip, financial means, accommodation, and return plans.
- You will also need to submit fingerprints at the time of application (with some exemptions).
- Submit your application online.
Consulates may request additional documents depending on your situation.
Visa Costs
- €90 for adults
- €45 for children aged 6-12
- €35 for applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus
- €67.50 for applicants from Cabo Verde
Additional fees may apply when using visa service centers. Some applicants may be eligible for a visa fee waiver.
How Long Does Processing Take?
Visa applications are typically processed within **15 days**, although processing times can extend up to **45 days** if additional documents or investigations are needed.
Family members of EU/EEA citizens may qualify for a faster and fee-free visa process under the Free Movement Directive.
